Artist killed on “peace pilgrimage”

Written by eastern writer on Thursday, May 29, 2008

An Italian performance artist travelling from Italy to Israel on a mission to promote peace has been murdered in Turkey.

Giuseppina Pasqualino di Marineo, 33, the niece of the late conceptual Italian artist Piero Manzoni, left Milan in March with fellow artist Silvia Moro. Wearing white wedding dresses, the duo planned to hitchhike across 11 countries as part of their “Brides on Tour” project.

The pair later separated in Istanbul with the intention of meeting up again in Lebanon. They hoped to end their journey this month by washing the wedding dresses in a public art performance in Tel Aviv.

Di Marineo, also known as Pippa Bacca, was last seen on 31 March. Her body was discovered near Gebze in northwest Turkey last month. A 38-year old Turkish man has been charged with her murder.

Byblos Art Gallery in Verona is planning to show the artists’ photographs and other items from the trip in an exhibition this autumn. [theartnewspaper]
